Why You Can't Curse Me With More Kids

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
In the very heart of your house,
Your children like olive plants,
All around your table.
-Psalm 128:3
I was talking to my husband one day and he told me about a conversation he had with a friend who had "wished more children on us." He said that a bit of sly laughter followed this person's "wish." So Husband asked me why do people do that--"wish" more kids on us? I told him it's not really a wish, as in a blow-out-your-birthday-candles-and-make-a-wish kind of wish. Rather, it's as though people are trying to "curse us" with more children.

Sounds strange, doesn't it? But think about it. Tell me if you've heard any of these, because we sure have:

"Some day, you'll have a child just like you."
"Pregnant again? Hmm! Maybe it'll be twins." (Then, when it wasn't twins. . . )
"Maybe next time it will be twins, then you'll stop!"
"Y'all just keep on having kids. . . " (I'm thinking, what else would we have?)
"You have six now; maybe you'll have even more." (Gasp! The horror!)

NEWS FLASH:
My husband and I, we like our kids!
Yes, of course we love them, we've loved them from the moment we knew they were in the womb. Without question, the love was there. But we actually like our kids, enjoy hanging out with them, playing and laughing with them, and experiencing new things together, teaching them what they should know.

And even more than that, we believe the Word of the Lord is true:
"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate." -Psalm 127:3-5 (NKJV)
Check out the same passage from The Message translation:
"Don’t you see that children are God’s best gift?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior’s fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children!
Your enemies don’t stand a chance against you;
you’ll sweep them right off your doorstep." -Psalm 127:3-5
And then there's this beautiful verse:
"They shall not labor in vain, Nor bring forth children for trouble; For they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, And their offspring with them." -Isaiah 65:23
And of course there are these verses, as well:
"But did He not make them* one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth." -Malachi 2:15 (*husband and wife)
"Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. When you eat the labor of your hands, You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine In the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants All around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed Who fears the Lord." -Psalm 128:1-4

So "cursing" us with more children is like cursing us with breathing air. We will gladly welcome any child God gives us, just as we welcome our next breath. We are thankful for the blessing of children.

Hard work?
Yes, indeed; you better believe it!

Worry free?
Uh, no. . .

Worth it?
Absolutely. For sure. Without a doubt.

  1. Beautiful post, Stacie! I always think, "God must really trust them if He continues to bless them with more children." That is the way I look at parenting. I know not all parents pour into their children, but I still believe He wants us here for a reason no matter the circumstances we are born into sort of like Esther.

I like my children too. It truly is nice to grow and learn with the little people has entrusted to us.

Keep up the good, hard work! :)

    1. Thank you, Latonya! It is funny you mention Esther, as we briefly discussed her & the circumstances surrounding her life this morning. The point was, God's plans can be carried out through any one, any thing, and any circumstance. Isn't it beautiful how the Holy Spirit works? :)

Your sweet girls are blessed to have you as their mama! May God strengthen our arms to do the work He has set before us in raising up our children for Him!

    1. Hi, there! It's always good to see your comments here.

I can only imagine the conversations. . .sometimes people can be outrageous! LOL

  3. I am new to your blog. Found you through Strangers & Pilgrims. Love it! I loved this post. I am not sure which is worse, hearing the comments face to face or actually seeing those beliefs lived out. I have found that those who are quiet about their thoughts ignore my children, but the ones who are bold enough to say things to me actually engage with my children. Maybe it is just me.

This is a beautiful post. Needed that encouragement. Not because I don't know these truths, but sometimes life can be crazy. My husband and I have going through a rough time and a friend of mine asked, "Well, why in the world did you have all those kids then?" As if we had less kids we wouldn't have any problems? Hmmm, not sure.

And a good one, truly a good one, as I was pregnant with my last child, and my dad asked if I still knew how to do math. I was like, what? I was 42 when she was born, and he was asking me that because of how 'old' I would be by the time she was 18 (implying I wouldn't have time to enjoy a child free life). Another friend of mine said, "Lord willing you will be 60 with or without children....I prefer to be 60 with children." Well put.

Anyways, just sharing. I am looking forward to taking a look around your blog!

    Blessings,
    Kerri

    1. Hi, Kerri! I'm so glad you stopped by and shared with me. Children are such great blessings from God! The strains and stresses of life don't change that. Marriages have rough patches and dry places, whether children have been added to the union or not. Stay the course, love on your family and continue to go to God in prayer...I'm so glad you found encouragement here. I hope we can continue to connect through our blogs. God bless you, Kerri.
