Book Review: Hermie a Common Caterpillar by Max Lucado

This is of course a children's book about a caterpillar named Hermie. Hermie is a "believer" and he knows that God loves him. However, he wonders why God didn't make him special. The ladybug has spots, the ant is strong, and the snail has his very own portable house. But Hermie feels so ordinary. Throughout the story, God is there, faithfully reassuring Hermie that He loves him, and that He is not finished with him yet. . .

I must say that as soon as I received this book in the mail and opened the package, my children wanted to read it right away. The book is very beautifully illustrated and is written for what it calls a "level two reader, for children learning to read on their own." While my son fits this category best, my daughters (8yrs and 6yrs) wanted to read the book and they both enjoyed it. My oldest daughter was pleased because Hermie finds out why he is special.

As the mom, I enjoyed the way Hermie was unashamed of his faith in God. I also liked the way it showed Hermie's uncertainties, what he struggles with. So many times, the enemy would have us believe that we are the only ones facing a rough time, but that simply isn't true. It shows children that we all have "storms" in life and I like the way Hermie continues to cast his cares on God. Ultimately, the lesson learned in this story is that God loves each of us, just the way we are. If we continue to trust in Him and pay close attention, we will see the special gift God has given us. A great lesson for children to learn!
