Math Help

Hi homeschooling mamas out there!!!

I need HELP and PRAYER in choosing a math curriculum. For whatever reason, choosing math is a great, big, question mark for me. Just when I think I know what I'll choose, I read something else and think, "Should I do that instead." WHY???????????? :o)

So, if you're reading this and you have any help or advice you'd like to give, please share. PLEASE!!!
I'm considering theories that I'd never thought of before (such as spiraling vs. mastery). Who knew?!?! If you're not sure what help to offer, please help me by praying. . .

Let me just give you a little info about my situation:
I'll be teaching ages 4, 6, and 8 (pre-K, 1st, and 3rd).
So far, they are all doing just fine in math, however, the oldest 2 are in public school.
I'm the most concerned about my oldest child, who's gone through 3 years of math at school. She's doing very well in math, no problems. But I just want that to continue.

Thanks in advance, ladies!!

  1. We loved "Math U See" in the elementary grades. Also used it in high school along with Saxon. I highly recommend checking out Math U See though since your children are still very young. I'll pray for you as I know what you are going through. God bless.

  2. Hi Jennifer,

I borrowed a few levels of Math U See from a friend so I could look through and get a better idea about it. . .still going over it.

Thanks so much for your advice and prayers.

    Take care,
    Stacie

  5. Hi, Stacie.
Thanks for taking the time to browse around my blog - and for sharing the story of your precious baby's loss with me. I am so thankful - as I'm sure you are, too - that we can be assured of meeting our pre-born children in Heaven one day.

I've just been wrapping up my blog "partying" - obviously, I could go on reading almost forever (!), but I made a commitment to only "get lost" in it for the official week of the party - and I just signed on as a follower of yours. :^)

Did you ever decide on a math curriculum since this post? My girls are a bit older than your kids, and we've tried several resources before finding what works for us. Let me know if you'd like to chat about what we settled on and why.

  6. Hi Tina,
    Welcome! I joined your blog, too. I'm #200--I couldn't resist! :)
I found some good resources too; which means I'll have to come back and read more. Right now, I'm getting sleepy! LOL

I think we are leaning heavily toward Math-U-See. However, I still would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the choices for your math cirriculum...

Thanks, Tina and it's nice to "meet" you.

  7. Hi Stacie,
For younger years here are some things we used:

    Books:
Miquon Math (Key Curriculm Press),workbooks from department stores, I Love Math series by Time Life (these might be in your library)

    Software:
Reader Rabbit's Math (Ages 6-9)(CDRom), Zoombins (CD Rom)

We used manipulatives like: Cuisenaire Rods(a must!) Geo Boards, Unifix Cubes,Pattern Blocks, Tangrams

    We played games like:
Monopoly, Racko, Cash Flow for Kids, Pizza Fractions, Fraction Jugglers, Coda, Battleship,
    Uno, Maya Madness

The first real text we used was Saxon 5/4 and we coninued with Saxon up to Saxon8/7. We tried BJU and ended up using cutting the word problems out of the book and using them for games. We also tried A Beka - I though they just required way too much.

We did not like: Quarter Mile Math or Wrap-ups, although they both sounded great in theory.

I am working a posting infor like this, for all subjects which will have links to them. But maybe this will get you started for now.

  8. Debbie,

Thanks so much for taking the time to type all of that out for me. You've given me lots of good information. There are number of resources that you mentioned that I've not heard of, so I'll be glad to look into them.

I'll be on the look out for your up coming posts for cirriculum choices...

    I appreciate it!
